Ten Ways to Promote Visual Books
By Shannon Wilkinson, President, Cultural Communications

Visual books are excellent promotional tools.  They create the ultimate buzz.  And, editors are 60% more likely to look at a press release with pictures as one without.

Here are ten tips to help you promote your book:

  1. Plan your campaign at least six months in advance.  A year is better.

  2. Identify your goals for your book, and what you want the book to do for your career.

  3. Remember the three-month lead time monthly magazines require.

  4. List every potential publicity outlet, including newspapers, magazines, radio and television.  Consider what angle might appeal to each.

  5. Integrate new media marketing tools into your strategy.  Consider using blogs, Internet talk radio, MySpace and YouTube.

  6. Create a book Web site (think of it as like a movie trailer).  A small site is fine.

  7. Start a blog.  Host it on your Web site.

  8. Brainstorm ways to involve celebrities in your book launch.  Remember, you’re only six degrees away from Kevin Bacon.

  9. Create a “long tail.”  That means your book will appear in as many search engines and New Media outlets as possible.  Forever.

  10. Set up a series of related events that continue long after your book comes out.  That helps create your real world “long tail.”
